1 Handicaps

1.1 Why does NGL use handicaps 1-9 instead of 1-18?

Because we deal with so many different courses, our system has to boil a scorecard down into its least common denominator so to speak. Since some courses have 36 holes and some have just 9, the only way that we can accommodate all courses and scorecards is to rank them 1-9. We do have and indicator for nines to indicate which nine hole courses is more difficult and use that when applying the course rating.

1.2 I don't want to seed Handicaps for my golf league.

If you do not 'Seed Handicaps', then the first time you enter scores for a golfer, you must enter a handicap on the scorecard in the HDCP column. If not, that golfer's handicap will be 0, and any handicap method with stroke control will adjust that golfer's score to par making them a 0 handicap golfer for the year. An easy rule of thumb for determining starting handicap for the year is to take the week 1 score minus par. For example, if a person shoots 55 for the first week, you would take the 55 - 36 (par) = 19 and enter 19 for the first weeks Handicap.

1.3 I have no Handicap Indexes but have scores and seeded values.

The Handicap Option 'Handicap Starting Point' has 2 values. 'Use scores for all season for this league' This uses all scores and handicap seeds for all seasons in the golf league. This is the best method to use because it allows handicaps to flow from one season to the next. This is the default setting. 'Use only current season's scores' This value uses only scores and handicap seeds that fall within the currently selected season dates. Any handicap seeds will need to fall within the seasons dates.

1.4 How is a course rating established?

The NCGA typically re-rates courses every six years, and sooner if the course has undergone significant renovations. Anywhere from 12 to 16 of the NCGA's more than 90 volunteer course raters will participate in a rating. When a golf course is rated, the rating team evaluates the overall difficulty of the golf course by taking into account the 10 obstacles and effective length corrections on every hole. They give a numerical evaluation of all obstacles on each hole – topography, fairway, green target, recovery and rough, bunkers, out of bounds, water, trees, green surface, and psychology – and use those number to calculate a rating. Members of the team will usually play the course before or after the rating to gain more insight into the course's level of difficulty. Usually course and slope ratings are found on course scorecards. If you can't find it there then the USGA maintains a database that is searchable online at the following location. https://ncrdb.usga.org/NCRDB/

1.5 What is a Handicap Index?

Is a number, to one decimal place (e.g., 5.6), that is a generic (i.e., not tied to any one course) representation of a golfer’s game relative to par. So, for example, a golfer with a 5.6 Handicap Index means that that golfer could be expected to shoot somewhere between 5 and 6 strokes over par on any given day.

1.6 What is the Maximum Nine-Hole Handicap?

The maximum USGA Handicap Index (N) is 18.2 for men and 20.2 for women. Note: A maximum USGA Handicap Index will convert to a Course Handicap that exceeds these numbers on golf courses with Slope Ratings greater than 113. Because of the variances in what our NGL golf leagues want, we allow the golf league administrator to change the course handicap when entering the information on the scorecard. For example, a golf league that plays on a course with a slope of 134, may choose to override all course handicaps over 22 by replacing the default course handicap with 22 (18.2 x 134/113).

1.7 How do I establish initial handicaps for golfers?

On your golf league homepage, click on the Golfer's name that you want to establish a handicap index for. The Golfer Profile will come up. Click the "Add Seed Scores for calculating handicap" to add a score that you want to include in the handicap. "Holes per round" will automatically be set to 9 or 18 holes depending on the way you set your season up. Enter the Course Slope (Slope Rating) (ie. around 113) and enter the Course Rating (Note: rating is divided in two for nine hole leagues if it is not listed on the scorecard for each nine). The number should be about 36. By entering these scores, your golfers will start the year with an established Handicap Index that can be calculated into a Course Handicap for the first week. The software handles this for you. These 'Seed' scores will continue to be included in the golfer's handicap index calculation until enough rounds have been played to bump them off the end of the list. Our handicap takes into account the most recent 20 scores and seeds to calculate a handicap index. This Handicap Index can then be used to calculate a Handicap for any Golf Course. You can see how a specific golfer's handicap has been calculated by clicking on the "Display Handicap Calculation" link from their profile page. If you chose to use only the 'Current Season' in your handicap calculation, make sure to use a date for your seed within your season's duration. Tips: Many golf leagues are entering 5 scores or more using the "Seed Handicap" screen to reduce the huge fluctuations in Handicaps that occur when using the USGA Handicap during the first several weeks of play. After entering 'Seed scores', if the Handicap Index doesn't show up in () next to the golfers name, go to the setup link and click the "Recalculate Handicaps and Scoring" button at the button of the screen. That will ensure everything is recalculated.

1.8 What is a Course Handicap?

Course Handicap represents the number of strokes needed to play to the level of a scratch golfer—or the Course Rating of a particular set of tees. A Course Handicap is expressed as a whole number (11 for example). Course Handicap is determined by using your Handicap Index and the Slope Rating of the golf course. You can calculate your Course Handicap using one of these methods: NGL Course Handicap Calculator: http://www.netgolfleague.com/HandicapCalculator.aspx Formula: Handicap Index multiplied by Slope Rating of tees played, divided by Standard Slope Rating (113) = Answer (rounded to nearest whole number, .4 rounds down and .5 rounds up) Example: 8.6 Handicap Index x 134 Slope Rating / 113 Standard Slope Rating = 10.2 = 10 Course Handicap

1.9 Why are my handicaps so low after week 1

One thing that causes a low handicap after the first week is leaving the handicap blank for the golfer's first week. The system assumes they are a scratch golfer. If Equitable Stroke Control is being used, it will limit the amount of strokes a person has for an adjusted score. You need to enter a handicap for each golfer on their first event. I would suggest using their score - par. (56-36 = 20). You can add the handicap in after the fact for the first week by going back to the scorecard for the event and entering a handicap. Make sure to click the save and recalculation button when finished. Your golfers handicaps will be updated. You can see a detailed calculation for your golfer's by click a golfer's name and then display handicap calculation link.

2 Scoring

2.1 What is Stableford Scoring?

===http://golfers.wordpress.com/2007/03/13/what-is-stableford/===

2.2 How do I setup Stroke Play?

Start by choosing "Match Play - Wins/Losses" or "Match Play - Total Points" from the Team Scoring System Dropdown. Setup link -> Season Configuration Button --> Dropdown. You can then change the configuration of the scoring by clicking the 'Team Scoring Configuration Button'. From this screen, you can choose points per hole, points per match, etc. see the Scoring Settings section in the help document for more information.

2.3 Why must I select pairings in order to show the player's name?

We used the same metaphor as the match play pairings. In Best Ball, it isn't really a pairing. It does however show who is playing in the current match. We do this for a couple of reasons. First, many leagues have more golfers on a team than play in each match. This allows Administrators to indicate who is playing each week and tells the system whose score to use for the match. Second, it allows golfers from one team to sub for other teams.

2.4 How do I do Fourball Match Play?

Our Team Best Ball is what you want to select. Do the following: 1. Click the Setup Link 2. Click the Change Season Configuration Button 3. Select 'Best Ball - Points' or 'Best Ball - Wins/Losses' for Team Scoring System. 4. Click Save Button 5. Click Team Scoring Configuration Button 6. Change the scoring configuration to your liking. (Look in the Help Document for more info on the settings)

3 Golfer Management

3.1 How do I let my Golfers know their Login ID and password?

You can easily send all of your golfers their Login ID and password by doing the following: Click on the Golfers link on your league homepage to pull up the Golfer List Screen. Check the check-box next to the golfers names that you want to send the information to. Choose 'Invite' next to the Email button. Click the Email button. Tip: The check-box in the brown section above each individual golfer's check-box is an easy way to select all the golfers at once. Simply check that box and all the boxes will be checked for you.

3.2 How do I add a Golfer that already exists in another golf league?

Golfers in netGolfLeague only need to be a member once. Once a member, golfers can be involved in many leagues. To add a golfer to your golf league that is in a current or was in a past league, do the following: Goto the setup screen by clicking the 'Setup' link. Click the 'Quick Add Golfer' button. Enter the person's name and email address. If the email address already matches a netGolfLeague.com member, they will be automatically linked into your golf league. That golfer will then be able to see either league when they login.

3.3 Adding golfers without an email address

You can add a golfer that does not have an email address to your league by doing the following: Click on the 'Edit' button on the Golfers section of the home page. Click the 'Add' button. Tip: * indicates required fields on the form.

6 Other

6.1 How can I upload files other than Text or HTML files?

If you have a file in another format (for example, as a MS Word (.doc) or MS Excel document (.xls)) that you would like to upload, you must first save it as either a text or html file before you can upload it to your netGolfLeague site. In most instances, you can do this by: Opening the file up with the application you used to create it; Clicking on "File" in main menu; Clicking on "Save As"; Changing "Save As" type to one of the accepted formats above. If you are still having problems uploading league information, please contact us at support@netGolfLeague.com.

6.2 I cannot login or am having problems staying logged in.

Make sure that your browser is set to accept cookies. A cookie is a small piece of information stored by your browser which we use to identify you and which allows you to remain logged in to "myLeague" as you move from page to page. 6.3 Our league runs for 20 weeks. We split the season into two 10 week halves. I need to save the stats and standings for the first half, but start with a clean slate for the second half. Handicaps would be kept for the second half, but all other stats would start at zero. How can I do this?

You can create 2 seasons - one for each 10 week half. Be sure to set the correct season duration (i.e., start and end date) for each of the 10 week sessions. Each season has its own scoring so this will handle resetting the points. In Handicap Options, the setting for "Scores to consider for Handicap Calculations" will need to be set to "Use scores for all season for this league" which is the default value. You can create as many seasons as you need for your league, and it will not affect your subscription which is one year in length.

If you are still having problems with your league login, please contact us at support@netgolfleague.com. Brought to you by www.netGolfLeague.com
